Luna van Leeuwen

Biography
Dutch violinist Luna van Leeuwen has been praised for her special expressiveness from a young age. When she won the Dutch Violin Competition at the age of 12, it was for her imagination and at the Royal Concertgebouw Competition, jury chairman Jan Willem de Vriend praised her “poetic and very convincing playing.” Luna has the gift of taking the audience with her “as if she is telling a story with the music and … holding the tension until the very last note” (Francis van Broekhuizen, National Finale Princess Christina Competition). “She has that great talent to play for people”, (Liza Ferschtman) Luna performed solo with various orchestras at a young age: with the Residentie Orchestra in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Real Filharmonia Galicia in Santiago, Spain. She was regularly heard at festivals and on radio and TV, such as the Kinderprinsengrachtconcert and as Jonge Held in Podium Klassiek. Luna consciously chose to develop herself broadly. She obtained her Gymnasium diploma and invested in her love for chamber music and symphonic repertoire. As concertmaster of the Dutch Youth Orchestra, she played, among other things, Rimsky Korsakov's Sheherazade. The NRC Handelsblad wrote about this: "The undisputed highlight was the wonderful solo musings of concertmaster Luna van Leeuwen." She also participated in the All of Bach project of the Dutch Bach Society, with which she contributed to an online library of all the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, under the artistic direction of Shunke Sato. She also performed at various festivals such as the Aurora festival and the Grachtenfestival. Luna studied at the young talent class of the Royal Conservatory with Koosje van Haeringen from the age of 7. By winning the International Wettbewerb für junge Geiger ‘Anton Rubenstein” in Düsseldorf at the age of 11, she received a rare three-quarter Carlo Bergonzi violin as an instrument. She now plays a Johannes Cuypers from 1801 and a Fétique bow. Luna is currently focusing on her growth as a musician and expanding her repertoire. She only gives a few concerts a year. In addition, she continues to develop herself in a broader sense. She translates her social commitment by launching a Children's Climate Concert Day as an initiator and organizer together with her sister Donna (cello), where children and young people draw attention to the climate in a positive way through music. Luna lives in Berlin, where she studies with Stephan Picard at the Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler'.
